Apex Hides the Hurt

Just finished book five, Apex Hides the Hurt by Colson Whitehead. I love this man's writing. I found myself laughing out loud. Whitehead is a master of the alter-world. Usually one similar to the environment we find ourselves in, but with an absurdest difference.

The lead character of the book is a nomenclature consultant. He is an expert at inventing the correct and catchy name for products. Things that will sell themselves. He is alone in a town that is paying him to decide on its new name. Lobbied by all factions, he mixes with villagers and visitors while seeking the the place's "real" name.

Both of the Whitehead books I have read, this and The Intuitionist, have been set in these interesting alter-worlds and both have African-American protagonists. They are statements on racism as well as the control that corporations have over us all.

I'm going to make an effort to keep up with Colson Whitehead. He has a way of winding together his stories that holds my interest and inserts me into a new and different world.
